Ancient Baths to Christian Church
Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri has relatively small front portals but beyond them lie the cavernous chambers of an ancient thermal establishment - Baths of Diocletian. Michelangelo turned the frigidarium into a church in 1561. The church is dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs who died building the original baths. Inside are works of medieval and modern art and an astronomical gnomon.
