Andrea Riccio was born Andrea Briosco in Padova but was nicknamed "Riccio" for his curly locks. He was trained as a goldsmith by his father, Ambrogio di Cristoforo Briosco. He later studied bronze casting under Bartolomeo Bellano, a pupil of Donatello. As an architect, he created models for the church of Santa Giustina in Padova.
