Otranto's cathedral originally dates from 1088.

The cathedral has a vast mosaic floor depicting the Tree of Life and a brilliantly painted coffered ceiling that could pass for glazed ceramic. There is also a collection of the bones of 800 Chrisitian martyrs contained in seven great cabinets in the apse. The great rock used by the invading Turks for the decapitations is also kept there.
