Warden Maria Grazia Giampiccolo has a successful restaurant inside her prison!

The 500 yr.-old prison also houses a restaurant whose waitstaff, chefs, sommelier and maƮtre d'hotel are all criminals serving time, some for brutal offenses. The 25 Euro five course dinners, served on paper plates with plastic utensils, reserve well in advance and have been sold out since the service began in spring of 2007.

The fortress is actually composed of two forts. The old, "Rocca Vecchia," built in the 14th century. Then after Lorenzo di Medici conquered Volterra in the 15th century, the "Rocca Nuova" was built, with a sturdy stone wall connecting the new and old fortress.
