The historically male-dominated profession of gondolier has been broken.
Alexandra Hai, a German woman living in Italy for the last 11 years, has become the first woman gondolier with qualification. Presently, Alexandra is only permitted to operate a gondola for a local hotel until she passes the rigorous gondolier test she has failed four times. Although her notoriety has brought positive attention to the small hotel for which she works, she remains the subject of heated conversation among Venetians. Alexandra believes the gondolier tests have been deliberately set up to make her fail.
