The largest sestiere of the city, Castello, stretches from San Marco and Cannaregio in the west to the modern blocks of Sant’Elena in the east. The area takes its name from the eighth century fortress that once stood on what is now San Pietro, the island that for centuries was the religious focus of the city. The industrial hub of the Castello was the Arsenale, where the great shipyards produced Venice’s indominatable fleet of warships.
