The Dorsoduro is named after the solid subsoil on which this area has been built, the word means “hard backbone”. East of the Accademia, the Dorsoduro is a quiet and pretty neighborhood with shaded squares, quiet canals and picturesque residences belonging to wealthy Venetians and foreigners. West of the Accademia, the sestiere is more vibrant with busy Campo Santa Margherita as its attractive focal point.
