The monument entirely hollowed out of a tufa rock bank has an atmosphere of mystery. According to Virgil in his description (Aeneid, VI), it is in this place that the abode of the Sibyl, the prophetic priestess of Apollo, must be located. It might, however, be a rare example of funerary architecture inspired by Creto-Mycenean tombs. The trapezoidal gallery measuring 131.50 meters long and 2.40 meters wide and 5 meters high is lighted by six side slits. It opens into a vaulted chamber, where it is said the Sibyl rendered her oracles.
