The 57-acre Florentine estate was bequeathed to NYU by Sir Howard and Hortense Acton.
The original owner Francesco Sassetti, was the general manager of the Medici bank during the 1460s. The Renaissance garden (1462) was replaced by an Italian Arts and Crafts garden designed by Henri Duchene for the Actons. The Actons' art collection, valued at half a billion dollars, can be viewed throughout the villa.
