La Pugliese

olivetrees_02.jpg
An olive oil producing area between Bari and Brindisi produces a special olive oil from ancient trees. The trees, however, are endangered.

The trees of this area called secolari the local dialect for "the time-honored ones" (estimated to be 500 years old) are being sold to northern Italians who wish to populate their villa gardens with venerable trees. An environmental group, known as Legambiente, is trying to protect the trees and market the olive oil (La Chiantata) to insure that the production will be enjoyed by future generations.
