mosaic28.jpg
An interesting ancient church with an adjoining mausoleum, the Basilica di Sant'Apollinaris was erected by order of Teodoric in the 6th century and dedicated to St. Apollinaris three centuries later.

The magnificent and world famous mosaics gracing this church were applied at different times by a host of artists. The oldest mosaics date from the 6th century and depict the Stories from the life of Christ; the realistic static figures are set against a gilded background, and alternate with crowns and white doves.
