When reading a train schedule in Italy it is important to understand the symbols for each train and their corresponding speed.
The following are the symbols and names beginning from fastest to slowest trains.
Es-pendolino-the fastest Italian train and usually non-stop.
IC-intercity-next in speed and runs more often.
Exp-express-still fast but stops frequently.
D-diretto-slower and stops frequently
L-locali-slow and stops at every stop-good only for going to very small towns.
Special Tickets:
Carts d’Argento (silver card) for seniors (men 65 and women 60 years of age)
Carta Verde (green card) for those 26 years of age and under.
Biglietto Chilometrico-valid for 3,000 kms. and can be used by up to 5 adults.
Flexi-card Pass- available 3 ways:
4 day unlimited travel within a 9 day period
8 days of travel within a 21 day period
12 days of travel within 30 days
Chilometrico Libera Circolazione-for lots of train travel and good only for non-residents.
Carta Blu-reduced price ticket for disabled.
