Constructed between the years, 1938-1948 and nicknamed 'Il Dinosauro', Stazione Termini is Rome's central station.
Stazion Termini is the nexus of all Italian railway lines and the hub for city transportation as well.
After an extensive renovation, the staton offers easier connections to subways, a special bus shuttle to St. Peter’s Square, and the Leonardo Express train serving Fiumicino airport. Rome’s largest city bus terminal is in the piazza right outside the station.
There are 100 stores in the shopping concourse which include Liberie delle Stazione Borri, one of the largest bookstores in Rome which sells English-language books and maps.
You may want to see the 1930’s Mazzoni wing, closed for decades and now newly restored. It is complete with grand arches, intricate brick vaults and marble coffered ceilings lit by Milanese designer Alessandro Mendini.
Incidentally, recent news stories out of Rome indicate that Termini Station may be renamed for Pope John Paull II.
