Don't miss this tiny hilltown with a intact peasant church in the Romanesque style. Afterwards, have a memorable meal at La Locanda di Pietracupa.
San Donato in Poggio is one of those out-of-the-way places that are so easy to miss when driving through the Tuscan countryside . A stroll through the village will reward any visitor with the tranqulity of an off-the-beaten path experience. The unspoiled Romanesque church here has a wonderful christening font by Giovanni Della Robbia which is from the 16th-century.
A short distance away is an exceptional restaurant. We had the pleasure to dine here during our recent visit as guests of our friends, the elegant Signora Manetti and her charming daughter, Giovanna. Along with our friend and colleague, Karin, we indulged in a menu of autumnal dishes complemented by a remarkable wines. The quality and level of cooking here was of the highest quality as was the service.
A few examples of the delicious dishes we enjoyed:
Cipolle di Tropea al forno (the renown ovoid-shaped red onions from Tropea in Calabria marinated and oven-baked)
Pappardelle di semola con ragł di lepre (homemade pappardelle pasta served with wild hare sauce)
Piccione con vinaigrette tartufata (tasty baked pigeon flavored with a delicious truffle vinaigrette)
The wines during the luncheon were a complex Tenuta Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo followed by a special small production Syrah from the same winery. Our hosts chose a Castello di Rampolla Vendemmia Tardiva Trebianco afterwards that we all agreed was superb.
