Every man enjoys a true hot lather straight-razor shave and Massimo on Via della Frezza in Rome delivers!
I spent a glorious hour in Massimo Bisante's tiny barbershop experiencing the art of the shave.
The experience began with the requisite drapery and a short study of the contours of my face, then the action began...Massimo gently began a series of hot towel applications to prepare my bearded areas. One...two...seemed to be sufficient but not for Massimo, he continued to apply these soothing towels until he believed the skin was just right for the second stage.
Next he dabbed dollops of shaving cream around my face and with a hot natural bristle brush began the lathering process. This seemd to go on for many mminutes as Massimo re-heated his brush with hot water to re-lather my face until he was satisfied.
After preparing a sterile straight razor, he expertly held my face taut while systematically gliding the blade over the many imperfect areas of my aging mug. Completing the first shave and toweling off
the excess lather, Massimo repeated the warm relaxing lather for additional minutes. A second closer shave removed any errant stubble and defoliated the upper skin layers.
If this wasn't enough, fresh hot towels were re-applied in a series that must have numbered five or six...I was swooning by this time and actually lost count!
My new best friend Massimo now inquired whether I would be interested in his specialty facial massage. Who could resist? This included an application of cream which he manually worked through my revitalized skin using his soft but powerful hands. Afterwards, he surprisingly activated an electric hand-held massage tool that he used to deliver the final stimulation.
The massage was followed by two or three successive cold towels to close the pores. A final head massage followed where Massimo applied a slight fragrance, a spin of the chair and removal of his drapery.
As it is the case with any true shave, when you exit the barbershop and re-enter the real world the wind on your face never felt better!
