Since 1996 Bruno Amitrano's bar, on via Cristoforo Colombo in Positano, has been our favorite place for a morning coffee. The nine tables across the street from the bar have spectacular views of the sea and village.
Today, the bar is still open and continues to serve a good cappuccino and fresh brioche. However, the new generation (daughters Maria and Ornella Amitrano) with the expert skills of chef Mario Rispoli serve quality local cuisine at reasonable prices.
Positano is not an inexpensive town. Many restaurants menu prices have soared in the past few years and the strength of the Euro hasn't helped. So, when we stopped in for an evening meal at Bar Ristorante Bruno recently, we were pleasantly surprised. The price/quality ratio was a real revelation. Service by Ornella and Antonino De Rosa was friendly and efficient, the nine interior tables were well spaced, the wines were affordable and the local dishes excelled.
Incidentally, proprietor Bruno Amitrano can still be found seated on his hand-hewn log chair greeting long-time friends and new customers.
