While reviewing our apartment collection in the surprising October heat of Rome, we took a few hours to visit the Borghese Museum.
The unparalleled sculpture and painting collection is located within the lush and expansive Borghese Gardens. The dramatic interior of this remarkable villa/museum was originally designed by Bernini whose sculptural masterpieces are also on view.
Highlights:
The sculpture of “Pauline Borghese” by Canova in Room 1.
Bernini’s “David” (the face of David is a self-portrait of Bernini) in Room 2 and his “Pluto and Persephone”.
The sculpture of “Apollo and Daphne” Bernini’s most famous work in Room 3.
Caravaggio’s “David with the head of Goliath” (Goliath’s head is a self-portrait of Caravaggio) in Room 8.
Titian’s “Sacred and Profane Love” in Room 20
Raffaello’s “The Deposition” sadly was under restoration. His "Lady with Unicorn" was on loan.
