Beware of unauthorized Taxi drivers in Rome!
Queuing for a legal taxi is always advisable.
Legal Taxi's have distinguishing marks:
A legal taxi has a TAXI sign on the roof and a identification plaque, near the license plate, saying ‘Servizio Pubblico’. Legal taxis can be white or yellow. The yellow sticker certifies that the taxi is authorized by the Comune di Roma. Stickers also list telephone numbers to call a taxi. A legal taxi always has the official sign on the roof and and a taxi meter inside.
Remember to check for all your belongings before leaving the car - forgetting objects in taxis is very common. You may note the ID number of the taxi in case you loose an article in case you need to identify it. A tip is not customary but gratefully accepted.
A few extra charges: There is an extra charge at night (10pm-7am); if a taxi drives you outside the G.R.A - ring road around Rome and about two EURO per piece of luggage.
