Visiting the Vaucluse area this summer? Stop by Lou Canesteou, one of the top ten cheese shops in all of France.
The proprietors of this gastronomic destination are Josiane and Christian Deal. They offer a wondrous selection of cheeses. Vist before that impromptu picnic or to prepare for a lavish dinner party.
You can choose from a multitude of cheeses, such as:
Brique de Brebis from Lozère
Les Roves-goat’s milk cheese in a ball shape
Saint-Marcellin-cow’s milk
Banon wrapped in chestnut leaves from Valreas
Tome de Mascaré Banon
Le Brousse de Rove
Le Rove des Garrigues
Chabichou du Poitou
St. Agur
Morbier
There is a fine selection of sausages and patés along with a good selection of local wines. Look for chef, cookbook author, Patricia Well's small production wines from Clos Chanteduc (Song of the Owl).
Open: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm.
Closed: Sunday afternoon
Afterwards, go to the west side of Place de Montfort to the artisan bakery, which has wood-fired oven baked breads. The Petit Casino grocery store has fruit and more beverages. If you are looking for something more substantial try Franck Peyraud Boucherie for excellent choice meats.
