Ruth McVey, retired from teaching at the University of London, enjoys her Tuscan life while making a small amount of excellent olive oil.
Ruth lives in a classic two-story Tuscan farmhouse, just outside of Montisi, surrounded by a grove of ancient olive trees. Ruth also raises sheep which she uses as a natural form of weed control.
At harvest time, the olives from Ruth's gnarled trees are picked by hand and taken to the local press. Her normal harvest of 1,000 kilos a year partly goes to the pickers by way of payment. She takes a quantity for herself, and the rest she sells directly to her neighbors and the lucky visitors vacationing in the area.
