This little-known village high above Positano celebrates its feast day in grand style.
During the first week of July, Montepertuso (Hole in the Mountain) celebrates with twinkling lights strung throughout the village, music, dance and local foods. There is a wonderful traditional procession carrying the Madonna di Montepertuso throughout the village and into the "hole in the mountain". The climax is a spectacular fireworks display later in the evening marking her arrival.
The fireworks display is a re-enactment of the battle between the Madonna and the Devil to gain control of the village. The Christian legend recounts the Devil's challenge to the mother of Christ to create a whole in the mountain in one attempt. The story goes that the devil tried three times without success, destroying a part of the mountain side but not breaking through. The Madonna tries once and succeeds, thereby winning the patronage of the village.
Incidentally, each year, in preparation for their festa, the women of Montepertuso join forces to whitewash the entire interior of the village church. A visit to the church (the origin of the procession) is highly recommended. The piazzetta in front of the church also offers an excellent panorama of the village.
This festival is not to be missed, it is always crowded, so get there early, find a place to park (or better take the bus) and enjoy the procession and stay for the fireworks.
