Valensole

| | Comments (1)

Valensole comes from the Latin "vallis" and "solis" meaning the valley of sun.

Valensole has preserved its character and charm typical of Haute Provence villages. It is a pleasure to stroll through the narrow streets of the old city. It is also a health resort, known for its pure fresh air.

The countryside all around (plateau de Valensole ) is beautiful especially in the spring when the almond trees are in bloom. In the summer aromas of lavender and thyme waft through the air confirming the fact that Valensole is one of the most important producers of lavender in Provence.

Take the "Route de la Lavande" and discover blue and violet Provence. It takes in parts of the Vaucluse and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence passing through superb small villages surrounded by hills and plateaux and lit by the inimitable Provençal sun. The scent of lavender is everywhere in the wind!

In summer the distilleries open their doors, and flower festivals abound. Craft fairs filled with producers exhibit their products, honey, essential oils, eau de toilette, soaps, and dried flowers. You can also treat your taste buds to goats' cheeses, olive oils, local hams and wonderful fresh breads.

Visit the "route" just before the harvest, from the beginning of July to the end of August but be warned if summer has been particularly dry the harvest can be earlier.

Fine or true lavender
Can be found growing wild or cultivated on the dry hills between 600 and 1 500 metres. It gives a refined essence which is much appreciated for its aromatic qualities.

Aspic or large lavender
Grows wild up to 600 - 800 metres altitude. Its essence is very camphorated and is used in paints and varnishes.

Lavandin
This is a hybrid crossing true and and aspic lavender and does not reproduce naturally. Lavandin is very resistant and grown for its profligate harvest. It's the most frequently cultivated lavender in gardens in Provence. There are a number of types of lavandin ( grosso, abrial, super, to name a few)
