This fascinating restaurant stands across the street from the old Roman slaughterhouse.
Proprietors are brothers Elio and Francesco Mariani and chef Mamma Ninetta works the stove-tops.
Historically it has had a superb source of meat and specializes in what the Romans call the “fifth quarter” of the steer and pig, the parts left for the poor after the steaks, chops and roasts have been sold to the rich. If you choose to play it safe, the stewed abbachio, or lamb, sweet and mild in spring and gamey in winter are safe bets. Try the salad of crisp greens called, puntarelle. Oak-paneled dining room.
Stellar cheese selection.
