Wines of Campania

| | Comments (2)

The wines of Campania, with its 14 DOC regions are predominately robust reds like Taurasi. Whites like Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo are pleasant and light in body with delicately perfumed fruit.

The native grapes of Campania:

Red: Aglianico (Basilicata) and Piedirosso

White: Greco di Tufo, Fiano, Flanghina, Coda di Volpa

The grandest cru of ancient Rome was Falernum, whose vineyards lie in northern Campania. Today, Falerno, as one of the region's 20 DOCs, is respected in its red and white versions, as are wines from around the Gulf of Naples that carry the names of Ischia, Capri and Vesuvius (as Lacrima Christi del Vesuvio). But the most vaunted wines of Campania come from the heights to the east: the white Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino and the red Taurasi, which was selected as the south's first DOCG (the G for guaranteed).

A recent favorite of ours has been Azienda Agricola Mustilli from Santa Agata dei Goti. http://www.mustilli.com
The proprietors Leonardo and Maria Lina Mustilli and enologist Santolo Buonaiuto produce a wide variety of wines from the classic Campanian grapes.
