The Island of Ischia

| | Comments (0)

Ischia, Capri, Procida and Vivara Islands are located in the Gulf of Naples.

To the north of the gulf are Ischia, Procida and Vivara, looking toward the "Flegrea" coast (from which the islands derive their name), while in the south of the gulf, opposite the Sorrento peninsula, is Capri.

The "flegree" islands are different from Capri both for their position and for their different geological origins.

Ischia is the largest island with her 47 square kilometers, followed by Capri with an extension little more then 10 square kilometers and Procida which is about 3 square kilometers. Procida is linked to the small island of Vivara which is a wonderful natural reserve.

Ischia, the 'green' island is the most beautiful and the largest island in the Gulf of Naple. Ischia is one of the most famous seaside spa centers of Italy and the world. Today, the island of Ischia is a well-known tourist center for four main reasons. Firstly, for its unequalled natural beauty, secondly, for its all-year-round mild climate, thirdly for its thermal water, and lastly for its modern tourist facilities.

The famous gardens were designed by Russel Page for Sir William and Lady Walton thirty five years ago. The distinguished landscape architect converted what Sir Lawrence Olivier described as a "stone quarry" into the exotic split-level rock garden it remains today. It has exotic plants and many fountains.
