VILLAGE INTRODUCTION Abbadia San Salvatore 53021 Abbadia San Salvatore (SI) Tuscany Italy
The medieval village of abbadia San Salvatore is virtually intact with its stone buildings now gray or black with age. In one of the narrow streets stands the small Gothic church of San Leonardo.
Little remains of the famous Abbey of San Salvatore, which was built in Lombard times as a Benedictine monastery and which rose to become one of the most powerful in all of Tuscany. The church was rebuilt in the 11th-century and subsequently altered several times. One fascinating feature does survive however from the original building: the crypt which dates from the 8th-century and includes columns displaying extraordinary Barbarian decorative elements.
