Built in 1897 was the third Great Camp by William West Durant, generally considered as the leading architect in the development of the Adirondack Great Camp style. He was the son of Thomas C. Durant, the general manager of the Union Pacific Railroad. He bought land at 5 cents an acre and amassed 670,000 acres.
Twenty-seven of the original 60 buildings remain. Sagamore is the prototype of most of the National Park Service lodge designs.
In 1901 William sold his Camp to Alfred Vanderbilt who later died in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.
